Many of our products qualify for the new 30% Federal Tax Credits as defined in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (Solar Energy Systems category under Photovoltaic Systems). In order to qualify, the products must have been placed in service on an existing or new construction residential home. Units installed on rental properties do not qualify for tax credits. In addition, the products must have been properly installed meeting all applicable building, electrical and fire codes. The tax credits will extend through 2034 - 30% for 2022-2032, 26% for 2033, and 22% for 2034. To assist with claiming a tax credit, Kennedy has provided a Statement of Certification for homeowners. The Statement of Certification is not required to be filed with your forms, but income tax regulations require taxpayers to have appropriate documentation to qualify for a tax credit. To claim a residential tax credit, download IRS form 5695 and instruction sheet. Kennedy recommends consulting a tax professional if considering filing for a tax credit.

Glass Skylight Questions

Generally, which mounting type you use depends on the slope of your roof. Curb mount models install on flat roofs and low slope roofs up to 14° or 3:12 pitch. Lower slopes should use a higher 6" curb. One key benefit of curb mount skylights is that the glass sash can be replaced without the need to re-flash the curb - saving both time and money when it's time to replace your skylight. Deck mount skylights accommodate most roof slopes. The SFG2 (2" curb) requires a minimum 3:12 roof pitch, the SFG4 and SFVG4 (4" curb) requires a minimum 2:12 roof pitch and the SFG6(6" curb) requires a minimum 0:12 roof pitch. Our deck mount skylights have modern, low-profile design providing more visual appeal. Because the curb is integrated in the deck mounted skylights, installation is quicker since no curb needs to be constructed. Deck mount skylights are a good choice for new construction. Kennedy also offers Replacement Sashes to quickly change out an older glass sash. Additionally, Kennedy deck mounted skylights come either with a fixed or vented glass option. Vented models allow fresh air into your home and also limit condensation and humidity.

Yes, you can purchase a Motorized System to automate the opening of your Self-Flashing Vented Glass Skylight. At this time, Kennedy does not offer a kit for adding a solar powered system to the manual SFVG model or to convert the electric motorized system to a solar powered system. View the Motorized System Accessory.

Yes, the Kennedy MD-ICMG, our highest performing glass skylight, has undergone intense water pressure testing, large missile impact testing and water infiltration testing to be officially certified by the Miami-Dade County Product Control as approved for all hurricane and HVHZ wind zones. It is available in 8 model sizes without a curb or in 3 model sizes with a 6" high curb. The ICMG model (the CMG model with the upgraded impact glass) also features a hurricane rated high impact glass.View the MD-ICMG model.

Yes, Kennedy can manufacture custom sized glass skylights to fit your needs or to replace an existing skylight. In order to place a custom order, please login and use our Custom Order Form for Glass Skylights. If you prefer, you can call us at 1.800.280.2545 and one of our sales representatives will assist you. In addition to custom sizes, Kennedy also offer custom exterior colors and the option for a natural wood interior.

Yes, Kennedy manufactures replacement glass sashes in common sizes that can easily replace glass sashes from other manufacturers including Velux. Additionally, you can place a custom order for a non-standard size. Our curb mount models are also available in common sizes to quickly replace an older skylight without having to replace the curb if it's in good condition.

Both glass types are considered safety glass, but as the name implies, the high impact glass is a higher-grade safety glass with a hurricane rating. Impact glass combines both a tempered and laminated glass into one double pane unit with a thin clear film. This film holds the glass in place and makes it resistant to impact. If impact glass should be struck so that it cracks, the glass fragments will stick to the plastic film preventing injury. Impact glass has been tested using wind speeds of more than 100 mph as well as launching 2x4s at them. If you live in an area prone to extreme weather, consider upgrading to our high impact glazing. Tempered glass is up to four times stronger than standard glass. When tempered glass is broken, it crumbles into tiny pieces instead of large, sharp shards.

It is possible to replace a plastic skylight with a glass skylight but there are a few things to consider. Because glass skylights are much heavier than plastic skylights, it is important to make sure the that there's enough support to accommodate the additional weight. Additional framing may be necessary. Make sure to use the same sized model and apply a foam gasket to seal the unit. Also ensure that the existing curb is in good shape and adequately flashed.

Polycarbonate Skylight Questions

Polycarbonate skylights are the best choice when considering installing a dome skylight. The main advantage of the polycarbonate material over acrylic is that it is 30x more impact resistant than acrylic. Polycarbonate is virtually unbreakable and will hold up in hailstorms and other extreme weather much better than acrylic skylights. Similarly, polycarbonate is 4X stronger than fiberglass of the same thickness. Fiberglass is made from a fiber reinforced plastic with glass fibers and does not do well in extreme heat. Heat exposure causes the fibers to deteriorate which causes yellowing overtime. Conversely, polycarbonate sheets have a UV protection layer that helps prevent discoloration despite daily exposure to sunlight. If you're looking for quality dome skylight, consider a Kennedy Polycarbonate Skylight over acrylic or fiberglass models.

All Kennedy Polycarbonate Skylights are double domed meaning that they are manufactured using 2 layers of plastic. The outer layer has a domed shaped with a light bronze tint which blocks out UV radiation. The inner layer is clear and assists in boosting its energy efficiency. Double domed skylights trap more heat delivering a much more comfortable home interior. The additional insulation also keeps in more cool air in the summer months. Double domed skylights are also much better at preventing condensation. As an added bonus, the additional layer may help block outdoor noises.

Both the CMA and HCMA feature an aluminum frame with welded corners that surrounds the co-extruded polycarbonate it protects. The HCMA frame is manufactured with a reinforced aluminum that features additional ridges to provide added strength. In fact, this extremely durable frame is what makes the HCMA hurricane rated and is recommended for areas prone to extreme weather.

Yes, Kennedy manufactures a few options for areas prone to extreme weather. In our self-flashing line, the HSFAW has been tested and approved for hurricanes in all wind zones. In our curb mounted line, we have two options - the HCMA or MD-HCMA. The HCMA has been designated as hurricane approved. The MD-HCMA skylight has undergone intense water pressure testing, large missile impact testing and water infiltration testing and has been certified by the Miami-Dade County building codes to be approved for all hurricane and HVHZ wind zones.

No, Kennedy does not offer custom sizes on our polycarbonate skylights. If you need a specific size skylight, consider placing an order for a Kennedy custom glass skylight.

Yes, polycarbonate skylights are much lighter than glass skylights which makes handling them much easier and results in a faster, more cost-effective installation. Also, because they are lighter, they do not need to have reinforced headers constructed.

Solar Attic Fan Questions

Each Kennedy Solar Attic Fan kit is fully assembled and functional right out of the box. It also includes a hardware kit with the screws needed to attach the unit to the roof, curb or gable (depending on model). The tools needed for installation include: caulk, caulking gun, flat bar, hammer, ladder, marking pencil, measuring tape, nail, reciprocating saw, safety goggles, Philips head screwdriver, stud finder, string and utility knife. Installation takes about an hour and requires basic DIY skills including using a reciprocating saw to cut hole in roof. Installation instructions for all models are on our downloads page.

Kennedy Solar Attic Fans can be installed virtually on any residential or commercial roof. Our models accommodate all roofing material including composite shingle, wood shake, metal, tile and clay tile. For some tile roof installations, an additional flashing skirt or turret extension is needed. We also have a specially designed Tile Profile unit. The roof mounted model installs on either pitched or flat roofs. On our adjustable models, the solar panel can be angled to the position it will collect the most sunlight providing optimal venting performance on all roof slopes. We also manufacture curb mount models with the choice of an adjustable or integrated solar panel. Curb mount models can be installed on all flat roofs including modified bitumen, built-up, rubber membrane, vinyl and polyurethane foam. Our gable mounted units install inside the attic over an existing gable opening and the solar panel installs remotely on the roof.

Yes, all Kennedy Solar Attic Fans qualify for a 30% Federal Tax Credit as defined in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (in the Solar Energy Systems category under Photovoltaic Systems). To qualify for a solar tax credit, the solar attic fan must have been placed in service on a residential home. Kennedy provides a Statement of Certification for the homeowner to download, complete and keep with their tax records. The Statement does not need to be filled with your tax forms, but income tax regulations require taxpayers to have appropriate documentation. To claim a residential tax credit, download IRS form 5695 and instruction sheet. Kennedy recommends consulting a tax professional if considering filing for a tax credit.

Yes, a small device called a thermal snap switch is available that will automatically turn ON and OFF your fan when the attic temperature is optimal and attic venting is not needed. Additionally, Kennedy offers a fire safety cutoff switch which is designed to help stop the spread of house attic fires during daytime fan operation by shutting down the fan. Both switches can be easily installed alone or together. Visit the Accessory Page.

Yes, the Kennedy Solar Attic Fan can be installed on any structure with a roof including sheds, barns, lofts, garages, workshops, guest homes - any space that could benefit from air circulation. We also offer a specialized garage vent kit that is added to our roof or curb mount solar attic fan in order to convert it to a garage exhaust venting system. Read more about the garage vent kit.

Yes, Kennedy offers a unique version of our solar attic fan where the fan and solar panel are installed separately. The fan housing is installed on the shady portion of your roof and is powered by a remote solar panel installed away from the fan on the sunny portion of your roof. The remote solar panel models are available in 16, 32, 48 or 65 watts. Learn more.

Building codes require all homes to incorporate a passive attic venting system. The problem with passive venting is that it rarely provides the pressure needed to force out the hot, moist air that builds up inside your attic. Adding a motorized attic fan provides the pressure needed to drive out the hot air and improve air circulation. Read more about how solar attic fans work.

Attic ventilation helps maintain a healthy, energy efficient home. It extends the life of your roofing shingles and underlayment and reduces moisture build up that can cause rot and mold. Attic venting can also reduce the load on your AC in the summer, which can save you money. In colder climates, it prevents damaging ice damming. Read more about all the benefits of attic venting.

Kennedy Solar Attic Fans are manufactured using only the highest quality components under the strictest control standards. All solar panels used on our units are high impact and engineered so that they work to full capacity even under the harshest conditions. The housing and flashing are made of heavy-duty, commercial pure grade aluminum that is powder coated inside and out with the choice of black, bronze or gray. It incorporates a quiet, powerful direct current motor. All models come with a limited lifetime warranty. Read more about tubular skylight components.

How many solar attic fans needed to properly ventilate an attic will depend on the height of the attic space, square footage, roof pitch and attic obstructions. To get a general idea of how many and which watt size units are needed for different attic types, please refer to this guideline.

Here are a few things to try:

Check that the solar panel is receiving full, direct sunlight. The fan will not work if your panel is shaded or partially shaded.
Check for dust, dirt or bird droppings on the panel. If your panel is dirty, clean it with a soft towel and warm water.
Check wire connections. Check all wires to make sure there are no loose wire connections.
Does your fan have a thermal switch? If so, test it to make sure it is working properly. Unplug the thermal switch and plug the male and female connectors together from the wire dangling down from your fan. If the fan works, then you have a faulty thermal switch. Please note that your solar panel must be in full, direct sunlight while performing this test. IMPORTANT - please keep your hands away from the fan blade to avoid injury.
Still not working? If your fan still does not work or if it's making a noise, please contact Kennedy Skylights to request a warranty replacement motor. Include a brief description of the problem. Please note that you will be required to pay a nominal $20 shipping charge in the lower 48 states and a $30 shipping charge in HI or AK.

Aluminum Curb Questions
